ITV releases first look at "scandalous" and "provocative" new drama with Mamma Mia! and Atonement stars

With ITV's new romance drama Adultery set to air next month, a batch of new first-look images have been unveiled.

The images give us new glimpses at Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!, Preacher) and Romola Garai (Atonement, The Hour) as Tom Kirkman and Beth Brookes, who find they have an insatiable desire for one another.

Other characters seen in the images include Beth’s husband Neil, played by Matthew McNulty, Tom’s wife Hannah, played by Shelley Conn, Tom’s daughter Jess, played by Leila Khan and Beth’s son Ollie, played by Johnny Sanpher.

Also starring in the series, but not seen in the images, are Andrew Knott (Gavin & Stacey) as Dave, the ex-husband of Beth’s recently deceased best friend, and James Murray (The Crown) and Charley Webb (The Long Shadow) as Paul and Leah Kirkman, Tom’s brother and sister-in-law.

Described as "scandalous" and "provocative" by ITV, the six-part series comes from BAFTA-award winning writer Danny Brocklehurst (Fool Me Once) and will launch in October.

The synopsis for the series says that it "raises questions about class, grief and the effects of social media, as it takes the viewer on a rollercoaster story of passion, parenthood and peril, as Tom and Beth embark upon a passionate and intense love affair that threatens to uproot their whole lives".

The synopsis continues: "Adultery is naturally authentic and bristling with passion as it focuses upon two families and messy complications.

"The series introduces us to Tom’s 15-year-old daughter Jess who has found love with schoolmate Ollie, and they can’t take their hands off one another, as love’s young dream becomes all consuming.

"When Tom meets Ollie’s Mum Beth in the most unexpected of circumstances, the two families’ lives are potentially turned upside down forever. Will Tom and Beth be able to control their desires unlike their lovestruck teenagers?"
