5,000 expected at BCCK for national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration

KUCHING: About 5,000 people are expected to gather at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) tonight for the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration.

Sarawak is hosting the national celebration once again, having last held the event in 2023.

Programmes will begin at 7pm with a pre-show segment, followed by the arrival of guests from 7.30pm.

Guests of honour include Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, along with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor are also scheduled to attend.

The official ceremony begins at 8.15pm, featuring the prime minister's address, followed by the signing of the Malaysia Day Celebration Special Book.

The event will showcase performances by invited artistes, a musical theatre presentation, and a grand finale bringing together performers representing Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak.

The public in Kuching can also watch a fireworks display at the Kuching Waterfront as part of the closing segment.

Leading up to the main event, several activities were organised, including a Malaysia Day exhibition from Sept 10 to 16 at Plaza Merdeka.

Two thanksgiving ceremonies were also held, namely an interfaith thanksgiving prayer on Sept 14 at Hotel Pullman and a thanksgiving service on Sept 15 at the Sarawak State Jamek Mosque.
