Popular Bangladesh Market in Durban to get a R2 million makeover

Chatsworth’s Bangladesh Market could soon look very different, with plans for a R2 million refurbishment, which will include new stalls, shelters, improved toilets and an expanded food court.

The eThekwini Municipality recently released plans for the refurbishment project earmarked for implementation during the 2026/27 financial year, which runs from July 2026 to June 2027.

The project will be funded from the municipality’s capital budget.

What’s changing at Bangladesh Market?

According to IOL, the proposed revamp includes a major overhaul of the existing market, with traders set to get standardised stalls and new storage areas.

A new sheltered roof is also planned over the open areas of the market, giving traders and shoppers greater protection from the weather.

Shelters will also be installed over the poultry section and open spaces at the market entrance, where traders currently operate without protection from the elements.

The food court is planned to be extended by three metres, with vents also being installed to improve airflow during hot weather.

The plans include improvements to the market’s ablution facilities too. The existing toilets will be refurbished, while another ablution facility will be built to make access easier for elderly traders who currently have to walk further to reach the toilets.

Another R2 million has been allocated

Ward councillor Tony Govender said R2 million had previously been allocated to the market during the 2025/26 financial year.

However, he said only lighting was completed during that period, with the remainder of the work delayed by various municipal issues.

A further R2 million has been earmarked for the current financial year, although Govender said this may not be enough to cover the full refurbishment outlined in the architectural plans.

Govender said the longer-term plan is not only to improve the market for traders and shoppers, but to make it a destination for visitors.

Following the refurbishment, the aim is to promote Bangladesh Market as a tourist attraction and a shopping destination for residents.

The upgrade is also expected to support economic activity in Chatsworth by creating a more attractive and functional environment for traders and customers.
