Brown Mogotsi’s bail bid hits snag over alleged escape plan

Translate

Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi allegedly planned to disguise himself as a Correctional Services official and walk out of court cells in an attempt to escape custody.

The allegation emerged in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday as the 45-year-old launched another bail application based on new facts.

The court postponed proceedings to 1 September 2026 to allow Correctional Services to provide a detailed report on the alleged plot.

Official allegedly raised alarm over escape plan

During proceedings, the prosecutor read an affidavit from the investigating officer, who said a Correctional Services official alerted him that the 45-year-old was allegedly planning to escape.

Authorities subsequently put measures in place to prevent this from happening.

NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the requested report would provide further details about the alleged plot.

“The postponement will allow Correctional Services to provide the court with a detailed report regarding an alleged escape plan involving Mogotsi, which was allegedly intercepted by correctional authorities,” Mohlatlole said.

Mogotsi remains in custody.

Charges linked to Vosloorus incident

Mogotsi faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, and perjury.

The charges relate to an incident on 3 November 2025, when Mogotsi allegedly told police that occupants of a bakkie pursued him while he drove alone in Vosloorus.

He claimed they fired several shots at his vehicle, forcing him to stop and flee on foot.

The NPA said it would continue placing relevant information before the court as the case proceeds.
