Barapullah Phase-3 opens today: What changes for Delhi commuters

NEW DELHI: The Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor was inaugurated on Tuesday, completing a key link between east and south Delhi.The around 9-km Barapullah route is expected to provide signal-free connectivity between Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and AIIMS.

Traffic advisory for inauguration

Traffic movement is likely to be affected between Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram Chowk from 9am to 2pm on Tuesday, according to the traffic advisory.The affected stretch covers areas including Sarai Kale Khan, Maharani Bagh and Ashram Chowk. Commuters have been advised to avoid the Ring Road stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram Chowk during the period and use alternative routes.A large number of people are expected to reach the flyover site in buses and cars for the inauguration ceremony.

What Barapullah Phase-3 will change

The Phase-3 corridor will extend the existing Barapullah network and provide signal-free connectivity from Mayur Vihar Phase-1 towards AIIMS.The corridor merges with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, completing a combined stretch of around 9km. The project is aimed at improving connectivity between east and south Delhi and reducing dependence on signal-heavy routes.The completed route is also expected to provide dedicated facilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

Amit Shah to inaugurate corridor

Union home minister Amit Shah inaugurated the completed Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor.Delhi PWD minister Parvesh Verma said Shah also laid the foundation stones for two new flyovers — Modi Mill to Kalkaji and the Savitri Cinema half flyover — and inaugurated the Mukarba Chowk underpass.The Barapullah Phase-3 project was approved in 2014 and work began in 2015. It was initially scheduled for completion in 2017 but faced multiple delays and cost overruns.

Its revised project cost is around Rs 1,635 crore.The two other flyovers announced for the ceremony are aimed at improving traffic movement in south Delhi, while the Mukarba Chowk underpass is part of efforts to improve connectivity on the Outer Ring Road in north Delhi.(With inputs from PTI)
