Jakarta provides 37 dedicated school buses for disabled students

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said that the provincial administration had deployed 37 school buses dedicated to students with disabilities, underscoring the capital's commitment to fostering an inclusive urban environment.

"We have prepared 37 disability-friendly school buses. They are reserved for people with disabilities, not for the general public. Maybe some of you here have already used the service, which covers 10 routes," he remarked during the Special Kids Expo in Senayan, Jakarta, on Saturday.

Pramono stressed that the Jakarta administration is legally obliged to provide adequate protection, services, and public facilities for residents with disabilities under the existing regional regulations.

"As mandated by Regional Regulation No. 4 of 2022, it is mandatory for Jakarta to provide adequate spaces and facilities for these kids," he said, referring to children with disabilities attending the event.

The governor went on to claim that Jakarta has the most inclusive and equitable education system for children with disabilities among all regions in Indonesia.

"We are now home to 88 special schools, comprising 13 public schools and 75 private institutions," he noted.

He added that the administration's support extends beyond secondary education, pointing to the Kartu Mahasiswa Jakarta Unggul (KJMU), a card-based higher education assistance program.

"If these children aspire to pursue education until an undergraduate, graduate, or even postgraduate degree, the Jakarta government already has a scheme called KJMU," he said.

Furthermore, he said the government had facilitated the participation of 120 children with disabilities, accompanied by their parents and coaches, in an upcoming Special Olympics event in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, where they will represent Jakarta.

"I have only one message: Please, give these children opportunities to demonstrate anything they have to bring pride to their parents, families, and Jakarta," he told stakeholders.
