ASUU-LASU vows to sustain strike until demands are met

Academic activities may remain suspended in all Lagos State-owned universities following the ongoing indefinite strike declared by their academic staff unions.

This comes four days after the Lagos State University arm of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-LASU, declared an indefinite strike over the state government’s failure to implement the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement, with the institution’s chairman vowing that the industrial action will continue.

Recall that all three Lagos State-owned universities — Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo; Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto/Ijanikin; and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu — unanimously agreed to embark on strike on Tuesday.

In a communiqué signed by the Secretary of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Comrade Thanny Nooem, and the Coordinator, Comrade Oluwaseun Babalola, the union said the decision followed months of what it described as “patient and constructive engagement” with the government without a resolution of the issues in dispute.

“This unfortunate and avoidable action has become necessary due to the continued failure of the government to address the union’s longstanding agitation over the implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement,” the statement said.

ASUU-LASU said it was demanding the “full domestication and implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN Agreement” as a condition for calling off the strike.

“The strike shall be total and comprehensive until there is a satisfactory resolution of the issues in dispute,” the union added.

The union expressed regret over the development, noting that previous efforts to resolve the matter through dialogue had not yielded the desired outcome.

The industrial action is expected to disrupt teaching and other academic activities across LASU campuses pending further developments.

The union ended its statement with the slogan “Aluta continua, victoria ascerta.”

Meanwhile, speaking with Vanguard on Saturday, the Chairman of ASUU-LASU, Comrade Oluwaseun Babalola, insisted that the strike continue.

“Yes, the strike continues. We have written to the state government and the management, yet they have not initiated any dialogue to resolve the issue,” he said.
