Make Jesus your senior advocate, Adeboye tells lawyers

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has urged Nigerians, especially judges and lawyers, to make Jesus Christ their senior advocate and counsellor as they navigate life’s challenges.

The cleric said this recently in Lagos at the church’s monthly thanksgiving service, themed “Wonderful Counsellor,” where special prayers were offered for members of the Bench and Bar across all levels and sectors, as well as their families.

He said that while members of the legal profession were trained to provide counsel and represent people in difficult situations, no counsellor or advocate compares to Jesus Christ, whom he described as the embodiment of divine wisdom and power.

He described a counsellor as an adviser who could be approached in times of trouble and possesses the wisdom to resolve difficult situations intelligently.

“There is no counsellor like Jesus, who is the wisdom and power of God, who is also wisdom personified.

“He can break all protocols, as He suspended the law of gravity to walk on the water. He raised the dead, even the one who was dead for four days.

“There is no advocate like Jesus who, according to the scriptures, is standing for us before the Father,” Adeboye said.

He noted that Jesus was known by several names, including Son of God, Son of Man, Lamb of God, The Resurrection and the Life, The Way, the Truth and the Life, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

The clergy, however, said the descriptions of Jesus as “an advocate” and “counsellor” were particularly relevant to the present circumstance, adding that they demonstrated His uniqueness.

Also, the Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration and Pastor in charge of Region 1, Dele Balogun, noted that lawyers and judges needed God’s wisdom and courage to discharge their duties effectively.

Balogun urged young lawyers to remain dedicated to their profession, advising them not to make money their primary motivation.

“Young lawyers should be dedicated and hard-working. They shouldn’t think of making money first,” he added.

The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, who attended the service, said the era when women played second fiddle had passed, noting that female judges now occupy prominent positions in several states.

Dipeolu urged female judges to remain conscious of God’s grace in their positions and seek divine wisdom and guidance, particularly ahead of next year’s election.

“What we privileged female Judges should have at the back of our minds is that we are what we are by the Grace of God.

“It is not because we are the most brilliant persons that we find ourselves in this position; it is the mercy of God.

“Therefore, my advice to my colleagues is that we should pray for more wisdom and God’s guidance, especially as we are going into the election next year,” she said.
