Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has reacted to his side’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, admitting that the Red Devils must improve their performances and start turning chances into results.

United suffered another setback on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as goals from Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman secured victory for Atlético Madrid. The situation became more difficult for the English side after defender Leny Yoro was sent off in the second half.

Michael Carrick expressed mixed feelings about his team's performance, believing Manchester United had opportunities to get something from the game despite the defeat.

He expeessed his disappointment after the game and believed that hid team could have done better.

“We need to find a way, for sure,”

The United boss also defended his players, insisting that there were positives to take from the performance, even though the result was disappointing.

Carrick was also asked about Lisandro Martínez’s post-match criticism of Manchester United’s hierarchy over the club’s summer transfer investment. Martínez had expressed frustration with the club’s recruitment strategy, arguing that United needed more reinforcements to compete at the highest level.

Carrick, who said he had not watched the full interview, suggested that emotions following the defeat may have influenced the defender’s comments. He called for unity within the squad, stressing that the immediate priority was to work together and prepare for the next fixture.
