Grey College appoints heavyweight coaching line-up

Translate

Former Japan captain Lappies Labuschagné has secured a coaching role at one of South Africa’s most prestigious rugby institutions following his retirement from professional rugby earlier this year.

The 37-year-old will coach defence for Grey College’s U15 team in Bloemfontein, with the appointment forming part of a series of coaching changes under the school’s new director of rugby, Wessel du Plessis.

Former Portugal forward Nelio de Sa and Shimlas assistant coach Chase Morison are among the other coaches appointed to Grey College’s U15 teams.

Labuschagné returns to Grey College

Labuschagné is a former Grey College pupil who went on to build a successful professional career in both South Africa and Japan.

He represented Japan in 19 Tests and captained the Brave Blossoms, including at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He was also part of Japan’s squad for the 2023 tournament.

His international career helped establish him as a respected figure in Japanese rugby, where he spent much of his playing career.

Labuschagné retired earlier in 2026 after a decade with Japanese club the Kubota Spears. He reached the milestone of 100 appearances for the club in February.

From the Cheetahs to Japan

Labuschagné began his professional career with the Cheetahs in 2011 before going on to represent the Bulls, Sunwolves and Shimlas.

His experience across different competitions and rugby environments will now be put to use in developing the next generation of players at Grey College.

The Bloemfontein school has a long-standing reputation for producing talented rugby players, many of whom have progressed to professional and international rugby.

Grey College has produced 49 Springboks to date, the second-most among South African schools behind Paul Roos who boast 56.

Labuschagné’s appointment brings his career back to the institution where his rugby journey began, this time in a coaching capacity.

His focus will be on defensive coaching for the U15 side as Grey College continues to shape its coaching structures under Du Plessis.
