The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Sunday, September 13, 2026, said the Visayas grid will be placed under red and yellow alerts due to limited power supply.

The red alert will be in effect from 6 to 9 p.m., while the yellow alert will be raised from 5 to 6 p.m. and again from 9 to 11 p.m., the NGCP said in an advisory.

The grid's available capacity is at 2,158 MW while peak demand is at 2,292 MW, the company said.

Further, some plants are on forced outage or running on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 1,044.5 MW unavailable to the grid:

  • 9 plants on forced outage in September;
  • 4 plants on forced outage since August 2026;
  • 1 plant on forced outage since July;
  • 2 plants on forced outage since June;
  • 7 plants on forced outage since May;
  • 3 plants on forced outage since 2025;
  • 2 plants on forced outage since 2024;
  • 2 plants on forced outage since 2023;
  • 1 plant on forced outage since 2021; and
  • 14 plants running on derated capacities.

Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3 are unavailable, while there is limited power import from the Mindanao grid, leading to the declaration of red and yellow alerts, the NGCP said.

"A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," the company said. —KG, GMA News
