Acer cautiously stocks inventory

Acer Inc (宏碁) is cautiously maintaining inventories of key components, including solid-state drives, DRAM chips, central processing units, panels and batteries, to cushion the impact of rising prices, the PC brand said on Wednesday.
While the company has seen demand growth for key components begin to slow and supply continue to increase, it remains difficult to predict when the supply-demand dynamics would return to a healthy situation, as suppliers do not fully disclose their capacity expansion plans, an Acer official who declined to be named told the Taipei Times.
Acer sources most of its memory chips from Samsung Electronics Co, SK Hynix Inc and Micron Technology Inc, the official said.

Amid surging memory prices, Acer’s strategy for product designs is allowing consumers to choose specifications that meet their immediate needs and upgrade later when memory chip prices fall, the official said.
Some products are even being designed with upgradable or replaceable motherboards to extend the overall lifecycle of PCs, the official added.
Global PC demand would likely come under pressure in the second half of the year if prices of key components continue to rise, Acer chairman Jason Chen (陳俊聖) said at the IFA Consumer Electronics and Home Appliances trade fair in Berlin on Friday last week.
