Google is launching a “universal” Gemini AI agent that can work across apps and devices in the background. The tool, announced as part of the Gemini at Work event on Thursday, will be available within the Gemini Enterprise app, allowing users to chat with the Gemini agent and assign it tasks from a single interface.

In addition to having Gemini work directly inside Workspace apps like Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, and others, users can interact with the agent from their mobile device, desktop computer, the web, and third-party apps like Slack or Microsoft 365. Since it runs in the cloud, Gemini will maintain the same context across all connected devices.

Google says Gemini can also work with job-specific sub-agents to complete tasks, as well as operate as a “coworker agent” with a dedicated identity and its own “@agents.company.com” email. Gemini will automatically perform tasks using an AI model that best fits the job.

The Gemini agent is currently only available to enterprise customers in private preview, but it may offer a glimpse into Google’s broader vision for the AI assistant that can answer questions and perform work for you from a single window. Google previously launched its consumer-facing Gemini Spark agent in May, which subscribers can use to perform tasks across Workspace and on the web, but it’s available through a separate interface within the Gemini app.
