Bill & Ted 4 Prospects With Keanu Reeves Addressed By Co-Star

Alex Winter weighs in on the possibility of a Bill & Ted 4 return with Keanu Reeves.

It has been over six years since Reeves and Winter last graced the big screen as Ted Logan and Bill Preston in Bill & Ted Face the Music. Even though it underperformed at the box office in summer 2020 after being released amid heavy restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, Bill & Ted 3 was still a major hit with fans and critics. Because of this, speculation has continued to grow around whether that film was the last time that Reeves and Winter would reprise the iconic pair. Now, Winter has finally given an update on the potential for Bill & Ted 4 to happen.

During an interview with The Guardian in which questions were submitted by fans, Winter was asked about the future of Bill & Ted 4. The Lost Boys star revealed that he and Reeves are open to returning for another sequel, especially since they have so much love for their characters and the franchise. However, the Bill actor also acknowledged that there are various factors that would need to come together in order to make the fourth movie happen:

Alex Winter: “Keanu and I would love to make a fourth movie. I think the stars have to align in a number of areas for that to happen. But we love playing these characters. We kind of are Bill and Ted. We started playing the characters so young, I don’t really think they exist without us. We defined the characters from the very beginning, so I don’t think it really matters how old we are. It becomes a question of how long can you act, and I think one can act until one is no longer breathing.”

Additionally, Winter commented on the possibility of the Bill & Ted franchise getting rebooted with new actors. He described that scenario as a “disaster,” admitting that he can’t really imagine anyone playing Bill besides him.

Alex Winter: “I really hope they don’t do a reboot. I don’t really want anyone else to play Bill, because I am Bill. That would be a disaster.”

The Bill & Ted franchise started with 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, which delivered memorable early performances from Winter and Reeves. The first installment featured best friends Bill and Ted as slacker teenagers who unexpectedly get hold of a phone-booth time machine, leading them to travel through the past to bring real historical figures to the present in hopes of acing their high school history presentation.

Thanks to the leading duo’s charm and fun chemistry, the original Bill & Ted movie became a pop culture phenomenon. Because of this, it was eventually followed by the 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Even though the follow-up didn’t have the same level of success as its predecessor, Bogus Journey is still considered a cult classic in its own right.

Nearly 20 years later, the duo returned for Bill & Ted Face the Music, in which the audience was reintroduced to a now-middle-aged Bill and Ted, once again tasked with saving the world through their rock music. The time-traveling comedy also starred William Sadler, Holland Taylor, Samara Weaving, Jack Haven, Anthony Carrigan, and Kristen Schaal. The third Bill & Ted movie received widespread praise from critics, who felt that the 2020 sequel successfully captured the original franchise’s tone and charm.

Following the movie’s release, the cast and crew had different opinions about the franchise’s future. Writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon believed that Bill and Ted’s story had already ended with the trilogy, though Winter has been consistent about his interest in making Bill & Ted 4.

As the wait continues for Reeves and Winter’s potential Bill & Ted 4 return, the two actors already have several projects lined up in the mneatime. After recently reprising Duke Caboom in Toy Story 5, Reeves will star in another major animated movie in 2027, voicing Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Reeves is also attached to star in Tim Miller’s time-loop thriller Shiver and in Ruben Östlund’s black comedy The Entertainment System is Down. As for Winter, he will next be seen starring opposite Robert Pattinson in A24’s highly anticipated thriller film Primetime.
