Why Mike Francesa Thinks The Troy Aikman And Joe Buck Drama At ESPN Barely Deserves A Second Look

Mike Francesa has spent decades watching sports personalities clash on the air, so a reported fight between Troy Aikman and Joe Buck barely moved him. The veteran radio host ranked their dispute well below his own famous battles and said so on two separate occasions, three weeks apart. His first reaction was a shrug. His second turned the whole saga into a punchline. The timing matters because ESPN, which employs both men, prepares for its first Super Bowl broadcast in February while Aikman has no contract beyond this season and Buck is signed through 2031.
Mike Francesa Compares Troy Aikman And Joe Buck To His Own Feud With Doug Gottlieb
Mike Francesa works with Aikman, and that colors his tone. In an October 15 video, he said he likes the Hall of Fame quarterback and respects him, and that a scuffle at midfield would not change his view. “I couldn't care if Aikman decked him on the way into the booth.” He added, “It means nothing to me. So I have no real feeling about it.”
On the November 6 edition of Francesa Football Friday, with WFAN's Sal Licata beside him, he went further. “I mean, these guys are amateurs,” he said. “I mean, when Aikman takes him out on the 50 and beats the hell out of him, then we got something, you know? Then, we have something.”

His podcast version came with a personal measuring stick. “Hey, they don't even know how to fight. They're rank amateurs.” He then pointed to his own history with Doug Gottlieb. “Go back to me and Doug. We knew how to fight.”
Troy Aikman Contract Status At ESPN And The Joe Buck Extension
The rift itself has little to do with fists. Buck's six-year, $108 million extension became public while Aikman waits on a new deal. Dylan Byers of Puck reported that Aikman turned “cold, difficult, short” in the weeks after he learned of it. Crew members told a different story about the truck, saying he would “frequently yell at everyone in the truck when he wasn't getting what he wanted.”
Andrew Marchand of The Athletic placed an argument at SoFi Stadium before the Buffalo Bills played the Los Angeles Rams on October 12. In his account, Buck asked, “You are not going to (expletive) talk to me?” and later said, “I'm not the reason you don't have a contract.”
Terry Bradshaw, who played quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, texted Buck about the reports. He told Brian Kilmeade he does not assume everything he reads is correct. “My understanding right now is that things are OK.”
Aikman gave Dallas listeners on The Ticket little more. “There's probably a time and a place for all that,” he said. “I don't know if now is the time.”
