The Springboks’ record at Ellis Park against the All Blacks

The Springboks have played a record 56 Tests at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, with 16 of those against the All Blacks.

No other venue has hosted more Test matches in South Africa than Ellis Park.

Winning streak

The first Test between the two nations at Ellis Park – which was also the first ever Test at the ground – took place on 21 July 1928, when the Phil Mostert-led Springbok side lost 7-6.

South Africa then went on a four-match winning streak between 1949 and 1976.

The first Test at the venue (on 15 August 1992) after South Africa were readmitted to the international fold saw New Zealand win 27-24.

The most recent Test at Ellis Park on 31 August 2024 resulted in a 31-27 win for the Springboks.

The most famous Test at the ground, the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, saw Joel Stransky land an extra-time drop goal to give the Springboks a 15-12 win.

South Africa’s biggest margin of victory (14 points), came in their 40-26 win on 14 August 2004.

The All Blacks’ most comprehensive win (11 points) came on 5 October 2013 when they triumphed 38-27.

The two bitter rivals will do battle for a 17th time at Ellis Park on Saturday, 22 August in what will be the first of four Tests in ‘Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry’ series.
