NAIROBI, Kenya, November 6 – The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has processed 157 verified claims valued at Sh96.95 million under Phase VII of its compensation programme.

The payments cover civilian victims and uniformed officers who suffered human rights violations during demonstrations and public protests.

According to the Panel, the verified claims include one fatality compensation award of Sh3 million, while five claims involving aggravated injuries attracted varying payments of between Sh1.5 million and Sh2.5 million.

The largest category comprises victims who sustained severe injuries, with 47 verified claims attracting Sh1 million each, amounting to Sh47 million.

Another 74 claimants with moderate injuries have been awarded Sh500,000 each, translating to Sh37 million.

The Panel also processed 19 claims involving minor injuries, with each claimant receiving Sh50,000, bringing the total to Sh950,000.

A further 11 claims relating to economic losses were approved at Sh50,000 each, amounting to Sh550,000.

The compensation programme seeks to provide redress to individuals affected by human rights violations during demonstrations and public protests.

The Panel has announced that it will stop receiving new compensation claims on November 14, 2026, urging victims who have not yet submitted their applications to do so before the deadline.

It said all applications undergo authentication and verification before decisions are made, with claimants notified of the outcomes within a reasonable period.

The Panel added that it continues to engage directly with victims, families and beneficiaries to address concerns, clarify the status of applications and ensure that those seeking compensation are treated with dignity.

Chairperson and Principal Coordinator Prof. Makau Mutua reaffirmed the Panel’s commitment to ensuring that all eligible victims receive fair consideration.

The Panel also pledged to maintain accountability and issue periodic public updates on the progress of the compensation programme.

Victims seeking clarification or assistance with their applications can visit the Panel’s offices at the ground floor of the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
