The X-Men's Next Major Reboot Is Officially 1 Month Away, And It Looks Incredible

DC Comics Absolute Universe is one of the biggest triumphs in comic books. The idea of reimagining classic heroes like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman without their support system was brilliant. It showed that even without the advantages of riches, paradise, and loving parents, the best of the DC Comics heroes will always choose to fight the good fight. On the other side of the coin are the worst versions of Zeus, Brainiac, and Joker, who had all of the advantages their nemeses no longer enjoy.
Like any smart company, Marvel Comics saw what was working and decided to counter with something similar of their own. That creation is the Midnight Universe, and the X-Men are a huge part of it. If that news isn’t good enough, there’s more to know about this amazing project.
Who Are The Midnight X-Men?
Ahead of its launch, Marvel laid out the details in late Spring 2026, stating about the hope consistently inspired by its heroes, “that hope dies in the shadows of the MIDNIGHT UNIVERSE, a new publishing line where top creators unleash haunting new visions of Marvel’s greatest icons.” In the case of the X-Men, and there is a war has started between mutant and vampire empyres (as it's being spelled by Marvel) over the sword of Damocles.
Midnight X-Men's creative team is as follows:

- Colors: Arthur Hesli and Matt Hollingsworth
A "sword of Damocles" is defined as "an impending disaster," and that much seems to be accurate. However, it's unclear what the sword is or does in this universe, or if it's a physical or magical object or metaphorical. Regardless of what it is, Marvel saying that "the unturned will be caught in the crossfire" means that many people will die or be turned into vampires in this series because of the broken truce.
On the vampire side, it's Storm, Gambit, and Iceman. On the other, there’s Magneto, his children (Polaris, Quicksilver, and Wanda Maximoff), and Havok. In between them could be Nightcrawler, who holds a position of authority in the church. The likely guess is that Kurt Wagner is on the side of good. That being said, as comic book fans have seen in the recent Ultimate Universe, even the best people can become monsters.
As seen in the Marvel Midnight Universe's striking trailer, Kurt can be spotted sporting a very sinister smile on his face. Yes, there is no guarantee that the smile meant anything, but it was put there for a reason. The easy guess is that he’s not the classic Nightcrawler who follows a righteous path. Since this universe is supposed to be the stuff of nightmares, having the epitome of good be evil would set the stage perfectly.
Why This Will Be A Must-Read
The Midnight Universe seems to be the darkest version of Marvel Comics characters since 1995's "Age of Apocalypse" event and Judd Winick’s Exiles. Other than those being X-titles, the similarity between those and Midnight X-Men is that fans can expect real consequences. That means if someone dies or is turned into a vampire, it will stick. It’s part of why the Ultimate and Absolute Universe are intriguing and will work here.
Maybe the best reason to grab Midnight X-Men when it debuts is because Jonathan Hickman is writing it. He is one of the architects who created the buildup to Secret Wars and the crossover event. He also helped build the Krakoan Age, which fans are still upset is over. There's no reason to doubt him now, especially with this being such an important project for Marvel Comics.
Lastly, it should be appreciated that there hasn't been a lot of information on the Midnight X-Men, leaving people with less to go on than normal. The trailer and social media posts don't reveal much, and neither have the creators. That's abnormal for comic books, and that's a good thing.
Sometimes, too much is known, and that takes away from the intrigue and mystery going into an issue's release. Thanks to the lack of information, when someone dies or does something out of the ordinary in Midnight X-Men, it will become a viral moment that will get more people into Marvel Comics’ newest universe.
