Kid Rock Reveals He Used AI on New Song with Eminem

Translate

Kid Rock’s song “Heal My Faith,” featuring his bud Eminem, also contained a previously unknown collaborator. Artificial intelligence.

As Kid Rock revealed during his appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, the newly minted Christian rocker used AI to create the choir on the chorus of “Heal My Faith.” Kid Rock confessed to using the technology after Maher asked about the musician’s thoughts on AI and challenged him by saying, “They can put out a Kid Rock song now that’s almost indistinguishable.”

Kid Rock showed some hesitancy about AI, saying he doesn’t know where the technology will end up, before admitting that he used prompts to complete “Heal My Faith.” While he used real singers for the chorus of “7 Sins,” another song from his latest album Halfway 2 Jesus, the use of AI in “Heal My Faith” came down to saving time, Kid Rock explained.

“I’m an impatient guy,” Kid Rock said. “It’s not about the money of getting a choir. But everything I look at in life now is time. How much time do I have?” Kid Rock described the process of prompting AI to create a facsimile of a Southern gospel choir, saying he loved the results. The admission sparked pushback from Maher.

“A lot of people in a choir, and we put them all out of work. Isn’t that what really happened?” Maher said. Kid Rock questioned whether he actually put anyone out of work, with Maher responding, “You didn’t have to get a choir in there. When The Beatles used a choir they needed to get a fucking choir.”

Kid Rock countered Maher’s contention by posing, “Did we put drummers out of work when the drum machine was invented?”

“I know AI is something different,” Kid Rock said. “I always tell people, you know, it’s a tool right now. I see the dangers of it. I one thousand percent believe it needs to be regulated at the highest levels.” Kid Rock emphasized AI can be useful for musicians.

The tête-à-tête over AI happened in the same appearance on Maher’s show that Kid Rock compared Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed to the 9/11 hijackers.

Kid Rock released Halfway 2 Jesus October 17 followed by the single “Heal My Faith,” both of which gained little, if any, mainstream fanfare.

Kid Rock had talked up the song and collaboration with his friend Eminem as a way of showing friendship can overcome politics. Kid Rock is a supporter of President Donald Trump, while Eminem has been a critic. For Eminem’s part, he said “Heal My Faith” wasn’t about choosing sides and “just choosing to make music with my old friend.”

Kid Rock says he used an AI choir in one of his songs.

Bill Maher: A lot of people in a choir, and we put them all out of work.

Kid Rock: Did we put them out of work though?

    Maher: Well, yeah.
