Malaysia warm-up for crucial Indonesia clash with sweep over Mongolia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia warmed up for their crucial quarter-final clash against Indonesia with a comfortable 3-0 win over minnows Mongolia in the first round of the men's team badminton event at Ichinomiya City on Monday.

None of the Mongolian players are ranked, while, at 41, Enkhbat Olonbayar was the oldest player in their relatively inexperienced side.

World No. 33 Leong Jun Hao started with a 21-13, 21-12 win over Batdavaa Munkhbat in the first singles match, which lasted just 25 minutes at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.

Men's world No. 6 pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani thrashed Battugs Bayarsaikhan-Bishrelt Erdene Odbayar 21-5, 21-5 in a quick 19-minute first doubles match.

Justin Hoh wrapped up the tie in the second singles, with the world No. 48 defeating Gerelsukh Jargalsaikhan 21-7, 21-12 in 25 minutes.

Scratch pair Aaron Chia-Tee Kai Wun's first doubles match against Dulkhishigchuluun-Enkhbat, and 81st-ranked Eogene Ewe's third singles match against Usukh Ireedui Uulensolongo, were not played.

Malaysia's last-eight clash against top seeds Indonesia will be held on Tuesday.
