‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ execs are not happy about “relentless” criticism the game has been getting

A key player at Insomniac Games has responded to the “relentless” online “negativity” surrounding its upcoming title, Marvel’s Wolverine.

James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, wrote on X: “I think the wild way this algorithm amplifies and forces negativity upon you has me reconsidering my philosophy on telling devs to look or post here. It’s a relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone’s mental health nor representative.”

Marvel’s Wolverine is due for release for PlayStation 5 on September 15, but trailers and gameplay teasers have been widely pilloried on social media. Some fans have claimed it contains visual similarities to Ben 10: Protector of Earth, while others have accused it of relying on narrative tropes familiar from earlier AAA games.

Marvel’s Wolverine, which was originally announced back in 2021, will see Australian actor Liam McIntyre take over the role made famous on the big screen by Hugh Jackman. The eagerly anticipated game has been developed by the team behind 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and its 2023 sequel.

The game will see Wolverine slashing his way through Japan, North America and the fictional city of Madripoor, with appearances from fellow comic book favourites Omega Red and Mystique. “Become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be,” reads an official description of the game.

Insomniac developers have previously said they’re trying to deliver “the ultimate Wolverine fantasy”, but have also warned that the story is “much darker and more brutal than you might expect” from the studio.

“Bold, resilient, and volatile, Wolverine is a character that all of us at Insomniac are thrilled to explore in collaboration with our friends at Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment,” reads a blog entry about the game. “Like our Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, we’re once again combining our super powers to deliver an original take on a beloved character based on Marvel Comics.”
