IFP leader calls for no bail and life sentences for convicted rapists

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Velenkosini Hlabisa says people accused of rape should not be granted bail and those found guilty should receive life sentences without parole.

Hlabisa made the remarks while addressing party members at the Greyville Racecourse in Durban on Sunday, 4 October, where the party launched its eThekwini manifesto.

IFP CALLS FOR TOUGHER ACTION AGAINST RAPE

During his address, Hlabisa urged men to join the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, emphasising their responsibility to protect women and children.

“Once you are arrested on a case of rape, the person must not be given bail until the case is finalised. When found guilty, the person must be given a life sentence without parole because rapists and murderers are monsters in our society who must be removed once and for all,” said Hlabisa.

Hlabisa’s comments come amid continued concerns about GBV and femicide in South Africa, with political parties calling for stronger action against perpetrators.

SIBIYA FACES RAPE AND OTHER CHARGES

IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa’s remarks also come as suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya faces six charges, including rape, sexual grooming of a minor, human trafficking and negligent handling of a firearm.

Sibiya is accused of raping an 18-year-old woman and sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl. He has denied the allegations, telling the Randburg Magistrates’ Court that his sexual encounter with the 18-year-old was consensual.

His bail application is ongoing, with the state opposing his release. The matter was postponed to 7 October.
