Universal's New Blumhouse Horror Officially Ends 2026 Slate With Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score

Universal and Blumhouse end their 2026 movie slate with a crushing blow.

After a rocky 2025 release schedule with back-to-back disappointments, 2026 seemed like a rebound year. After moderate financial success with Lee Cronin's The Mummy, Obsession became Blumhouse's crowning jewel. The studio had a few more highs and lows, but its latest horror movie, Other Mommy, had a chance to end the year with a final win. Unfortunately, those hopes have backfired.

With over 500 ratings, Other Mommy has earned a disappointing 46% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. For director Rob Savage, that's the second-lowest audience score of his career and, unfortunately, the second-worst for any Blumhouse movie released this year, just ahead of Strung (43%)

Leading up to its release, audiences were elated to see Blumhouse's supernatural horror, as The Other Mommy trailers went viral for their spookiness and shock factor, especially the jump scare featuring Jessica Chastain's creepy doppelgänger hiding under a kitchen table. That marketing strategy worked, and the horror became a highly anticipated hit with moviegoers.

Despite the anticipation, eyebrows were raised when reviews for Other Mommy were scarce just a day before its theatrical release. Soon, word spread that the studio held no pre-release press screenings with critics and film pundits, raising red flags about the movie's quality and the studio's lack of confidence.

Eventually, critics likely saw the movie on its preview day, and mostly negative reviews came out the next day. With 56 reviews so far, Other Mommy currently has a low 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Several reviews criticized the Blumhouse horror for rushing the story, poorly executed visual effects, and failing to carry the emotional depth of the narrative deviation.

Meanwhile, while Savage bragged about 50 jump scares, critics and audiences agreed the terror factor felt cheap. Despite Chastain's efforts, her dual role as the highlight doesn't save the horror from feeling sillier than scary. While the trailer is clearly better than the movie, some viewers took the bright side with a "so-bad-it's-good" mentality and found it unintentionally funny.

Although the reception was very negative, the review delays may have worked in the movie's favor. With a $19 million budget, Other Mommy projects a $28 million domestic three-day total, beating Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning. That debut estimate exceeds Obsession ($17.2 million) and Insidious: Out of the Further ($25.1 million). However, Blumhouse's last 2026 movie is unlikely to keep that retention because of the polarizing response.

Universal still has time to rebound with their final two releases, Focker-in-Law and Violent Night 2. Meanwhile, Blumhouse has a disappointing end, but a promising future. The studio has a very packed 2027 movie schedule, including Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist: Martyrs, River, and Paranormal Activity. Curry Barker, who directed Obsession, is reuniting with Blumhouse for a new horror, Anything but Ghosts, set for May 2027.

Other Mommy is based on Josh Malerman's 2024 novel Incidents Around the House, and it follows a family haunted by a supernatural entity that resembles Chastain's matriarch. Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, Dichen Lachman, and Arian Moayed round out the cast.

Other Mommy is now playing in theaters.
