Brandon Sanderson is weighing in on more casting for the Mistborn movie, addressing the idea of Jack Black as Breeze.
In January 2026, Apple made a major movie by acquiring the rights to the author's sprawling Cosmere universe, including The Stormlight Archive, which the studio is developing as a TV series, and the original Mistborn trilogy, which they are turning into a feature film franchise. Sanderson is writing the script for the first film and has been frequently sharing updates along the way.
Now, answering fan mail on his YouTube channel for Halloween, Brandon Sanderson responded to a question about Jack Black playing Breeze in the Mistborn movie. While the author worries that the actor's star power and meme-worthy reputation might distract from the character, Sanderson certainly thinks that Black has the acting chops to play Breeze. Read his full response below:
I think Jack Black is a little too well known. If he wanted to do it, I think he would nail it. Jack Black can do a lot of things, but I'm worried about the memes.
Sanderon shared several other casting updates for the Mistborn movie, saying that the "only big name" cast will be as Kelsier, while they will "look for talented new actors" to play Vin and Elend. In turn, if the movie casts its "only big name" as Kelsier, the half-skaa rebellion leader, another big name in Black likely won't be cast as Breeze.
In the books, Breeze is a full-blooded nobleman whose real name is Lord Edgard Ladrian, but he hides his heritage and pretends to be a half-skaa conman, often manipulating those around him. He is described as portly and lazy – often avoiding physical work and enjoying a life of comfort and fine wine, but beneath his cynical and detached exterior, he is deeply kind, compassionate, and cares for others.
Opinions are mixed among fans regarding the idea of Jack Black as Breeze. Though he is frequently fancast because of his physical build and energetic screen presence, some fans argue that Black's down-to-earth comedic persona does not mesh with Breeze's cynicism or aristocratic demeanor as a refined nobleman. Others, seemingly Sanderson himself, believe Black has enough range to play Breeze.
Ultimately, fans will have to wait and see who gets the nod. Until then, the fancasting debate isn't going anywhere, though Sanderson might prefer fewer memes and more Mistborn magic.
