SASSA grant suspensions to BITE hard in 2027

All beneficiaries of social welfare better be ready for increased SASSA grant suspensions from now into 2027. That was the message in Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s MTBPS on 21 October.
In it he not only confirmed the R370 SRD grant will be extended to March 2028 expiry, but that SASSA grant suspensions need to increase in scale and ferocity. Moreover, the National Treasury is counting on those tighter verifications to save money and pay beneficiaries …
South African Social Security Agency spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi confirmed the following figures for recent SASSA grant suspensions:
- 105 600 beneficiaries were placed under review between April and June 2026.
- 56 807 of these had their grants suspended.
- That’s 18 886 per month.
- Or 620 per day.
- That is a 54% conversion rate for those reviewed.
SASSA checks bank statements submitted when you apply against credit bureau data and other government records. Problems arise, Letsatsi says, when someone shows no income to SASSA but a flow of income is evident when applying for credit, for example.
A family member might send a one-off. payment for renovations or medical costs, for example, without the beneficiary earning a regular income. “We don’t just abruptly wake up and cancel your grant,” he said, adding that payments are delayed over successive months so beneficiaries have time to notice and respond before SASSA grant suspensions move forward.
SASSA FRAUD BACKDROP

SASSA’s crackdown follows real losses:
- Officials at a SASSA office in Sekhukhune were dismissed in July 2026 after a syndicate was found to have manipulated databases to facilitate R33 million in fraudulent payments.
- A February police operation led to arrests linked to R5 million in alleged fraudulent SASSA payouts.
- According to an Auditor-General report, in 2025/26, R211 million has been paid to deceased recipients.
WHAT TO DO TO AVOID SASSA GRANT SUSPENSIONS
- Keep your contact details with SASSA up to date.
- Respond to SASSA requests for documents or reviews promptly.
- If your payment stops, contact SASSA and explain any deposits that might have triggered a review.
- Keep all records of one-off transfers, such as family help for medical bills.
