Slow Horses season 6 keeps getting better.
The spy dramedy, based on the Slough House novels by Mick Herron, is quietly among the most encouraging stories of streaming success. It debuted relatively quietly in early 2022. But season after season, thanks partly to the consistency of its release schedule, it has cemented itself as a solid two-time Emmy-winning hit for Apple TV.
It has succeeded to the point where its co-lead star Jack Lowden, who shares the screen with Gary Oldman, is consistently floated as a contender for the next James Bond. That success is poised to continue in Slow Horses season 6, which premieres on Wednesday, September 16, despite a change in the format and a new head writer.
That's already evident in the Rotten Tomatoes score of Slow Horses season 6, which has debuted at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The score is currently based on 10 reviews, and it's subject to change as more critics add their assessments in the coming days and weeks.
Slow Horses has hit 100% in the past, for its second and fourth installments. But the Average of Rated Reviews for season 6 currently sits at 8.90 out of 10. The upcoming episodes adapt two of Mick Herron's novels, Joe Country and Slough House, rather than just one, which is a new format for the dramedy. It will see the characters embroiled in a new high-stakes mission, one that brings back House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke as Sid Baker. Although the character hasn't been seen since season 1, her character was seemingly positioned as a leading protagonist before seemingly being killed off.
The fact that she's survived is part of the mystery, with the Slow Horses new and returning cast also including Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Rosalind Eleazar, Joanna Scanlan, Samuel West, Ruth Bradley, Tom Brooke, Jonathan Pryce, Hugo Weaving, and Lenny Rush.
Co-executive producer Gaby Chiappe has been promoted to head writer, with series creator Will Smith taking a step back to focus on other projects. It hasn't seemed to dampen the forecast for the show's much-awaited return, as Collider's Carly Lane notes that the series is still “intriguing as ever” while embracing a major turning point for the already renewed Slow Horses season 7.
Slow Horses season 6 premieres Wednesday, September 16, and will air one episode a week until the finale on Wednesday, October 21.
