Lockheed Martin (LMT) on Tuesday said it secured a $694 million U.S. Air Force contract to produce hypersonic missiles and announced plans to establish a missile maintenance facility in Poland, expanding its role in U.S. weapons production and European air defense.

The Air Force contract covers production of the Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon, a hypersonic missile designed for deployment from B-52 bombers. The weapon can travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, and is intended to strike targets from long distances while maneuvering to overcome defensive systems.

For investors, the announcements highlight two sources of potential growth for Lockheed (LMT): U.S. spending on advanced weapons and increased European demand for missile defense systems. The ARRW award moves the program into production, while the planned Polish facility could provide recurring maintenance and support business as NATO countries expand their missile inventories. However, Lockheed (LMT) didn't disclose the financial terms or expected revenue contribution of the Polish operation.

Lockheed (LMT) also broke ground on a 47,000-square-foot expansion of its manufacturing facility in Troy, Alabama, that will triple the site's existing production space for ARRW. The company said it had committed $67 million to the expansion and related equipment before receiving government funding, part of a broader plan to invest $8 billion to $9 billion in munitions capacity through 2030.

Patriot facility in Poland

Separately, the company said it would establish a dedicated maintenance facility for the Patriot Advanced Capability‑3, or PAC-3, missile in Poland to support NATO countries operating the interceptors. The facility will handle repairs, refurbishment, recertification and other maintenance activities intended to shorten turnaround times and improve missile availability.

The Polish operation will involve industrial partnerships with Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, along with the U.S. and Poland. Lockheed (LMT) said the facility would use local suppliers and create skilled jobs, although it didn't specify the investment amount, construction schedule or expected employment.

The expansion comes amid growing demand for PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors, which are designed to defend against ballistic missiles and other airborne threats. Earlier this year, the U.S. government awarded Lockheed (LMT) a $58.62 billion multiyear contract to increase PAC-3 MSE production, providing a substantial source of longer-term business for its Missiles and Fire Control segment.
