‘Spa Weekend’s Adam Demos Reveals the Hardest Co-Star To Work With

Taylor Gates is an Indiana native who earned her BFA in Creative Writing from the University of Evansville. She fell in love with entertainment by watching shows about chaotic families like Full House, The Nanny, Gilmore Girls, and The Fosters.
After college, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a writer, editor, and filmmaker. Today, she’s a sucker for dramedies — especially coming-of-age stories centering around complex female and LGBTQ+ characters. She has been with Collider since May 2022.
Adam Demos is no stranger to playing the love interest. From the Netflix rom-coms Falling Inn Love and A Perfect Pairing to series like UnREAL and Sex/Life, he’s taken on a wide range of charismatic, sought-after guys. His previous roles have no doubt prepared him well for his newest character: a sweet and witty yoga instructor named Kai in Spa Weekend.
Though Kai meets all the women on the Spa Weekend, he forms a special connection with birthday girl Jane (Leslie Mann), a single mom and lawyer. Despite having the odds stacked against them — there’s an age gap, and they don’t even live in the same city — their chemistry is undeniable, and they can’t seem to stay away from each other. Kai encourages Jane to start living her life for herself, while Jane inspires Kai to follow the dreams he originally cast aside.
Collider got the chance to speak to Demos about his work in Spa Weekend. During the conversation, he discussed building his chemistry with Mann, what he learned from the entire cast, what Kai’s future could look like, his favorite days on set, and more.
‘Spa Weekend’s Adam Demos Talks Playing Leslie Mann’s Love Interest
“They allowed for this fluid nature of the scenes.”
First of all, congratulations on this movie. I had a lot of fun with it. I feel like your chemistry with Leslie Mann was so fun. There was such nice playfulness and authenticity, especially in the banter. Can you talk about working with her to find that rhythm with the dialogue?
ADAM DEMOS: She's obviously so incredible that you just sort of rock up, and the best thing I could do is be present. But she's so cool, too, and we got along off-set. I think our directors really encourage just being in the moment and improvising, and so whatever feels natural, go with it. The script's there, but it’s okay to interrupt or answer, and they allowed for this fluid nature of the scenes. It felt so natural, so it's cool that it resonated with you, too, like that.
Even from the blooper reel, I could tell that there was a lot of improv going on. Do you have a favorite improv moment from anyone, whether it made it into the movie or not?
DEMOS: There are too many. All of them. Every time Isla would yell something at me, the hardest job in the world would be trying not to laugh the whole time. My first day on set was when the strippers came in. The things that they were improvising…. And then I had to enter about a minute into the scene. Like, “How am I gonna get through this movie without laughing?” What a gift, man. It was such a good time.
I want to talk about the hand massage scene, because I feel like it was kind of sexy, even though it's obviously sort of silly as well. How do you find the romance and groundedness in something that is probably a bit absurd on paper?
DEMOS: I think my way into it — even when I offer it up to her in the scene — is that I have to know that it sounds stupid in order for it to work. But I think she does all the heavy lifting in that scene. You have to believe that you can do the thing, but that was a lot of credit to her for going there with that scene.
Adam Demos on a Potential ‘Spa Weekend’ Sequel
“There'll probably be a lot of crystals.”
I'm manifesting a sequel. I hope we get to see Kai with his restaurant. What do you think his restaurant would be like? What's the vibe? What food is he serving?
DEMOS: He's a yogi, so I'm sure there'll be a lot of healthy options on the menu — biodynamic and all that sort of stuff.
What do you think the decor is like there?
DEMOS: There'll probably be a lot of crystals.
Like a yoga studio-slash-restaurant.
DEMOS: Yeah. He feels like more of a smoothie bar kind of dude.
Jamba Juice, you have some competition.
DEMOS: That's right. I'll leave it up to our writers. They're smarter than me with that.
The soundtrack in this movie was really fun, really top-notch. If you're going on a weekend trip, what do you put on your playlist?
DEMOS: You know what? I can't get enough of country music. That's my road trip stuff. Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and things like that — that's all me at the moment.
One of my favorite moments in this movie is when Jane walks in on her young kids watching Pulp Fiction. Is there a movie that you watched way too young that either scarred you for life or inspired you to want to be in this business?
DEMOS: I was pretty young when I watched Anchorman, I guess. I was raised by a single mum, so she was at work very late, and I got to watch a lot of things I probably wasn't supposed to, but nothing that scarred me. She wasn't coming home and putting Pulp Fiction on, let’s put it that way.
Adam Demos Reveals His Favorite Day Shooting ‘Spa Weekend’
“It’s the most fun I've ever had on a job.”
This movie looked like it was so much fun to make. Do you have a day on set that you'll always remember that sticks out to you?
DEMOS: It's definitely the scene where I first meet them. That's for sure. Everyone was there, and all of the improv before I entered the scene… It was a beautiful day, and you're on the beach on the Gold Coast, and I couldn’t stop laughing. That day was, to me, like, “How lucky am I that I'm getting to do this?” I felt so happy. It was a really cool day.
You're a powerhouse in your own right, but you're obviously working with these other powerhouses as well. Is there something specific you feel like you learned or took away from them by working with them?
DEMOS: They're legends, right? But they have a freedom to them — all of them. And how much they care. That was the thing I took away the most. They didn't get to where they are by just phoning in anything. They're always trying to make the scene better, and they’re super collaborative. Even Leslie, when we'd be doing these scenes, she was like, “What do you think?” Just to work together as a team. That's what really stuck with me. They were really, really collaborative.
Oh, I love to hear that it was as fun to make as it was to watch.
DEMOS: It’s the most fun I've ever had on a job.
