Newport Beach Film Fest: ‘Furious’ Star Emmy Rossum Will Receive TV Performance Award, Guest on Live Episode of ‘Awards Chatter’ Pod

Emmy Rossum, the critically acclaimed and popular actress best known for her nine seasons on the TV series Shameless, will be honored with the Newport Beach Film Festival’s outstanding performance in television award (actress) in recognition of her latest and, some feel, greatest turn as an FBI agent pursuing a female serial killer on Elizabeth Meriwether’s Hulu drama series Furious.

The celebration of Rossum will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, on the Mainstage at Fashion Island. It will kick off at 3 p.m. with a career-retrospective conversation moderated by yours truly, which will be recorded in front of a festival audience for subsequent airing on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. And that will be immediately followed by the fest’s presentation of the award. Tickets are free, but an RSVP is required.

“The Newport Beach Film Festival is thrilled to honor Emmy Rossum for her remarkable performance in Furious,” Gregg Schwenk, co-founder and CEO of NBFF, said in a statement. “From the opera stage to the screen to the director’s chair, Emmy has built a career defined by range and fearlessness. We are proud to celebrate her talent and the impact of her work.”

Rossum, 40, who began performing at the age of seven as a member of the Metropolitan Opera, burst onto the acting scene with her performances in 2003’s Mystic River, under the direction of Clint Eastwood, and 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera, which brought her a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe Award nomination. She was subsequently cast as Fiona Gallagher, the daughter of perpetual screw-up Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy), on Paul Abbott and John Wells’ Shameless (2011-2019), for which she garnered two Critics Choice Award noms. Other notable TV projects have included Angelyne (2022) and The Crowded Room (2024). But never has she been more lauded than for Furious, on which she also served as an executive producer via her Composition 8 banner, and which could bring her the first, well, Emmy nomination of her career. A second season of the show was ordered before the first had even finished airing.
