Katy Perry's cinema 'blockbuster' makes just £21,000 at UK box office

She is – or rather was – one of the bestselling pop stars in history. But amid dwindling album sales, Katy Perry's freefalling career appears to have hit a new low after her concert film bombed at the box office.
The singer's £4 million film, shot over two nights of her Lifetimes tour in Paris last year, was intended to bring millions of fans together to celebrate her music. But The Mail on Sunday has learned that the film made just £21,000 on its limited release in UK cinemas earlier this month.
Around 150 cinemas and IMAX theatres across the country staged screenings to largely empty auditoriums. At one showing in Leeds, no tickets were sold at all, while in Coventry just two die-hard fans turned up.
In contrast, a crowd-sourced wildlife documentary, Super Nature, released around the same time as Perry's film, sold nearly twice as many tickets.
An insider admitted that interest in the singer's movie had been dire and that the takings would not cover the cost of making it.
'This has been an incredibly poor showing and just shows how far her star has fallen,' he said. 'The production was shot over two nights with a large crew and cost a huge amount of money. It certainly hasn't paid for itself.'
It is not clear how it performed in the US as no box office figures have been released, but in New Zealand it took £844, and in Colombia just £3,717.
In contrast, Taylor Swift's concert film,shot during her 149-date Eras tour, made £12 million in the UK and £198 million worldwide when it was released in 2023. It became the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

Perry's Lifetimes Tour was a success live, selling more than a million tickets over 91 nights worldwide. But the film could not replicate that.
In Milton Keynes, an IMAX screening attracted just 17 people and a second screening brought in ten fans. Just 17 fans bought tickets across two screenings in Edinburgh, and even in London's Leicester Square, the flagship Vue cinema sold just 42 tickets out of 201, taking £881.58. It is a spectacular fall for Perry whose 2010 album, Teenage Dream, equalled Michael Jackson's record of scoring five US No 1s from a single album.
But her latest album 143, was met with savage reviews on its release in 2024. Her dancing on the Lifetimes tour last year also went viral for the wrong reasons, when it was compared to a school talent show.
Perry, 41, who was widely mocked for taking part in the all-female Blue Origin space flight last year, is now dating former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
