Stephen Curry moved past Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson on the NBA's all-time scoring list Thursday night, taking 17th place with a first-quarter three-pointer against the Miami Heat. The Golden State Warriors guard did it at home, early in a 2026-27 season going better than most people predicted for the team. His scoring, 30.0 points a game on 42.9% three-point shooting through the first six games, has pushed Curry into early MVP talk, and the Warriors are winning more than their preseason outlook suggested even with Jimmy Butler and other key players missing time.

How Did Stephen Curry Pass Oscar Robertson On The NBA Scoring List?

Curry came into the game three points short of Robertson, and the first three-pointer of the night took care of it. The shot dropped with 7:02 left in the opening quarter, roughly five minutes after tip-off. DeMar DeRozan is the next name up the list at 26,775 points and still adding. Six games is a small sample, though a 30-point average makes more spots on the list reachable. What stands out is the workload. Curry is getting those 30 points a night in about 29 minutes, which leaves Golden State some room to manage minutes while injuries hold back parts of the rotation.

Is Curry A Real MVP Candidate This Season?

Basketball Reference's MVP tracker has Curry fifth, behind Luka Doncic, Victor Wembanyama, Alperen Sengun and Tyrese Maxey, and all five players have paired big numbers with strong team results. Doncic and Wembanyama are the favorites on most betting sites. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander missed the top five, though he is chasing a third straight award, and injuries to Oklahoma City's top players could help his case if the Thunder keep winning. Nikola Jokic has slipped after a slow start and uneven team results.

The obstacles are real. MVPs usually come from a top-four seed, and Golden State finishing there would shock a lot of people, especially with Butler out for stretches and Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis missing time as well. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg has started well, but the rest of the supporting cast is thin, and the Warriors are leaning on role players until the injured group returns. Curry would likely need a 2016-level season to win a third MVP.

Golden State would likely rather get healthy than lean on one scorer for every win. Health and age are the main arguments against Curry in the race, since the other players on the tracker are younger.
