Jason Watkins' twist-filled drama with a retired detective hits number 1 in UK streamer's chart

It may have returned over a week ago, but season 2 of detective drama The Game is still holding strong on 5's streaming service. At the time of writing, Jason Watkins' show is still at the top of the current most-watched chart.

The series follows retired police detective Huw Miller, who is convinced that his neighbour — Robson Green's Patrick Harbottle — is secretly a notorious serial killer named the Ripton Stalker, who had successfully evaded capture.

Without going into spoilers, season 1 ended with the serial killer — we won't say whether it's Harbottle or not — behind bars, but that doesn't mean that Miller is out of the woods.

Season 2 sees the killer torment the detective from behind bars, and Miller's family could end up being collateral in their twisted game.

All four episodes of the second season, as well as all the episodes of the first season, are available to stream now on 5.

The show initially seemed like a one-and-done, but its success prompted a second run.

And given how this season has topped 5's streaming chart, could it lead to a third season?

"I can neither confirm nor deny about The Game 3 but if this one does well again who knows?" Watkins said.

"I know that they would enjoy finding a way forward. I think viewers will be very surprised where series 2 goes. In series 1 we had quite a suburban street where all the characters existed. It was a suburban backdrop for The Game whereas now we are out there in the wilds."

He also explained that the response to the first season was "so strong" and that the audience enjoyed it "in many ways", so it looks like he's feeling pretty confident.

The Game seasons 1 and 2 is available to stream now on 5.
