The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has ordered a lifetime ban on a driver who hit an 82-year-old woman crossing a pedestrian lane on Maharlika Highway in Naga City, Camarines Sur on Monday.

The elderly victim was rushed to Bicol Medical Center after suffering serious physical injuries but she was declared dead upon arrival, the LTO said.

“We cannot ignore an incident like this, especially when the victim is a pedestrian using a designated crosswalk," LTO chief Markus Lacanilao said in Filipino.

"Our stance is clear that drivers who jeopardize the lives of other road users must be held accountable. In cases like this, we will strictly enforce the law and ensure proper accountability,” he added.

The driver was ordered to surrender his license to LTO Regional Office V’s Intelligence and Investigation Unit.

The involved vehicle was also placed on alarm, suspending all its pending registration transactions and operations.

The LTO earlier said that it is drafting a memorandum order that could lead to the revocation of the driver’s license of motorists involved in pedestrian lane-related incidents. –NB, GMA News
