Ekurhuleni murders: 10th woman’s body found at Tembisa cemetery

Police have confirmed the discovery of another woman’s body in Tembisa, Gauteng, as investigators continue probing a series of women’s deaths across Ekurhuleni.

The woman’s partly clothed body was found at the Mooifontein Cemetery on Saturday morning, 26 September.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the discovery.

The woman’s identity was not immediately known, and police have yet to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

The latest discovery comes amid heightened concern over a string of women’s bodies found across Ekurhuleni in recent weeks.

Woman found at Mooifontein Cemetery

According to initial information, authorities found the woman partly clothed at the cemetery on Saturday morning.

Police have not yet released her age or indicated whether she had any visible injuries.

It also remains unclear whether she died at the cemetery or whether someone dumped her body there.

Police have not yet linked the latest case to any of the other deaths under investigation.

Another body as police investigate women’s deaths

The latest discovery comes after police established a multidisciplinary team to investigate the deaths of women found across Ekurhuleni. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has also joined the investigation, as police intensify efforts to establish whether any of the women’s deaths are linked.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane previously ordered detectives and specialised policing units to examine each case, analyse evidence and determine whether any of the deaths are connected.

Police previously raised concern over similarities in some cases, including women being found naked or partly clothed and with signs of bruising. However, SAPS cautioned against assuming the cases were connected before investigators established evidence linking them.

10th woman found in Ekurhuleni area

Saturday’s discovery reportedly brings the number of women found dead in the broader Ekurhuleni area to 10, while 11 women’s bodies have been found across Gauteng in recent weeks.

However, police have repeatedly stressed that the discoveries should not automatically be treated as the work of one perpetrator.

Investigators have already established different circumstances in some of the cases, while they continue looking for possible links in others.

The latest discovery will now form part of the growing police investigation into the deaths.
