Translate

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Mohammed VI Football Academy complex in Rabat to emerge champions.

In a congratulatory message issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Barau described the victory as a landmark achievement that had brought immense pride and honour to Nigeria.

He said, “This victory is a remarkable achievement that has brought immense pride and honour to our country. It is another landmark moment in Nigeria’s football history.”

The Deputy Senate President, who is also the founder of Barau FC Kano, a club competing in the Nigerian Premier Football League, expressed particular delight at the achievement, stressing the need to identify, nurture and support young sporting talents.

He commended the players for their determination, discipline, teamwork and fighting spirit, noting that their performance demonstrated the resilience and potential of Nigerian girls to compete successfully at the global level.

Barau also applauded the technical crew, the Nigeria Football Federation and other officials for their contributions to the team’s success.

He said the Flamingos’ triumph would serve as an inspiration to young Nigerian girls to pursue excellence in sports and other fields of endeavour.

The senator also rejoiced with President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians over the victory, describing it as a moment of national pride.

He expressed confidence that the achievement would further encourage investment in grassroots sports development and provide opportunities for emerging talents across the country.
