The Super Mario franchise really is one of those timeless efforts in the world of video games, where millions of players will always be interested in what's coming next. That said, there are only so many games that Nintendo can bring us, and long gaps between releases are almost a bit of a hallmark at this point.
Happily, we live in a world where older games have very much come back to the fore, and millions out there spend most of their gaming time playing retro titles from years gone by. That is only furthered by the dedicated community of fan developers, who alter old games to change their content, or make them more immediately palatable to a modern audience.
Now, the latest of those has just received its first trailer, and it's already drawing plenty of praise for what fans have seen so far.
Over on Twitter/X, the user Reitcent shared the trailer for Super Mario Adventure, a "classic 3D platformer for the GameCube, being made within Super Mario Sunshine using the Better Sunshine Engine." It's a compelling premise, and the footage shown in the trailer will undoubtedly appeal to those who grew up playing games in that era.
The game comes from Team Elements, and it looks like classic Super Mario fare at the time of writing, though they haven't gone as far as telling us about everything they have planned just yet. That said, it very much feels like a case of them creating a game that answers what it would be like if the GameCube had a 3D platformer in the series, like the N64.
Over on the YouTube channel where the trailer was originally published, there were plenty of comments from fans who were excited to play for the first time.
"I love this so much! 2000’s video game aesthetics have always intrigued me with their mix of weird almost plastic sheens and overly realistic textures. This captures it all so perfectly. I can’t wait to play it!" one comment read.
While another added, "With 'adventure' I thought it was going to be a Mario skin for Sonic Adventure, but was pleasantly surprised to see it was an original 3D platformer! I’ll keep my eye on this when 'whenever' it comes lol."
"I would love to play this! Like imagine in a world where we didn’t get Mario Sunshine, but we got this as the 3D Mario game for the GameCube? I never got far in Mario Sunshine, but this looks great. I hope it gets made into a real game," a third said.
The developer hasn't shared a release date just yet, but it seems like it's going to be a case of it being ready when its ready. Given that these are passion projects with no remuneration, that's totally fair enough.
Outside of that, Nintendo has not yet officially announced the next flagship 3D Mario game, with the last platformer in the series being 2017's Odyssey. Rumors are swirling that 2027 could be the year that we finally get something, so let's just hope that comes to pass.
