South Africans’ Thailand freedom is about to be cut in half

South African passport holders travelling to Thailand for tourism are about to see a major change to how long they can stay without a visa.

South Africa is one of 60 countries and territories affected by the change, published in the Royal Thai Government Gazette on 31 August.

Thailand visa-free South Africa: why the change is happening

From 15 September 2026, Thailand is cutting its visa-free stay allowance from 60 days down to 30 days.

The current 60-day visa exemption remains valid for entries up until 14 September.

Anyone who enters before that date keeps the full stay period they were granted at arrival.

From 15 September onwards, though, South Africans and travellers from the other 59 listed countries will only receive 30 days visa-free for tourism purposes.

According to Thailand’s government, the change follows a review aimed at;

preventing misuse of visa privileges, including concerns around unauthorised work, nominee businesses and transnational crime.

The updated exemption is also refocused specifically on tourism, narrowing some of the broader allowances that existed under the previous 60-day rules.

Thailand visa-free South Africa: what this means for your trip

If you’re planning a Thailand trip longer than 30 days starting on or after 15 September, check your visa options before booking.

The shorter stay period may require a different visa category.

Alternatively, Thai immigration may offer an extension once you’ve arrived.

Travellers entering via land borders should also note an added restriction.

The visa exemption now generally limits land-border entries to two per calendar year for most nationalities.
