Reacher Abandons A Recurring Trope In Season 4, And It's About Time

There are some things every season of Reacher must include. If Alan Ritchson doesn't use a seemingly innocuous object to cause grievous harm to an enemy, something's gone terribly wrong. Invariably, some unfortunate soul will get verbally jabbed for uttering "Jack," "Mr. Reacher," "Major Reacher," or some other variation on the main character's moniker. And at least once per season, Reacher's lack of social skills will create an awkwardness so heavy it has its own gravitational pull.
Thus far, all three seasons of Reacher have also paired Ritchson's character with the season's female lead, mixing work with pleasure as Reacher develops a more personal relationship with his latest partner. In season 1, it was Roscoe. In season 2, the Dixon flame was briefly relit. In season 3, Reacher and Duffy let off some steam whenever the opportunity arose.
There is precedent for this in Lee Child's books, and more broadly, in the archetype of a Bond-esque lone wolf hero who never settles in one place long enough to forge lasting relationships. The string of love interests from location to location is just part of the job.
In Prime Video's Reacher, however, the trope has endured diminishing returns. The dynamic between Ritchson's character and Willa Fitzgerald's Roscoe was dynamite, then Reacher and Dixon's very different tryst in season 2 had a more nostalgic tone to it. In an otherwise excellent third season, Reacher's romance with Duffy added nothing of value, almost like the singular factor driving them together was "because this is what always happens."
Reacher Season 4 Cleverly Subverts The Show's Romance Trope
Based on the show's history, one would expect Reacher season 4 to have Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher and Sydelle Noel's Tamara Green grow closer with each passing episode, eventually giving into the tension somewhere around the midway point before suffering through an awkward goodbye in the finale. Reacher may only be on episode 4 of its current run, but that clearly isn't the path this season is taking.
Reacher already spent a night with Lila, Agnez Mo's character, and certainly appears to have a soft spot for her, as Tamara, Jacob, and Plum have gleefully pointed out on several occasions. Reacher season 4's fourth episode kills that romance dead by revealing in its final moments that Lila, alongside her silent friend, has been the real enemy all along, the distinctive wound left by a karambit enough to connect them to multiple dead bodies.
It'll be fascinating to see how sleeping with the enemy affects Reacher as the investigation moves forward. Almost certainly, he'll feel a degree of personal resentment over being deceived by Lila for so long. Perhaps, however, Reacher's usually sharp instincts will continue to be dulled by an opponent he clearly harbors feelings for. Either way, at least he won't need an excuse to break things off in the season finale.
Reacher Season 4 Is Sending Tamara Green In A Different Direction
With Lila effectively writing herself out of being Reacher's love interest by, er... killing some people, a viewer might logically assume the path is now clear for Reacher to start edging nearer Tamara during their long car journeys between states.
Not so. Reacher doubles down on subverting the show's usual romance pattern by subtly hinting in episode 4 that Tamara will instead develop chemistry with Jacob Merrick.
Currently grieving the deaths of his only two family members, Jacob still finds time for a little light flirting. Tamara and Jacob share a tender moment outside a subway station, both letting their respective guards down while they wait for Reacher. Jacob's thoughtfulness in picking out three separate types of sweetener because he doesn't know how Tarama takes her coffee also doesn't go unnoticed. And when Tamara risks getting caught infiltrating a government facility, Jacob's worry betrays his true feelings, especially when compared to the cool-as-a-cucumber Plum sitting next to him.
In a move few would have predicted when Reacher season 4 started, it appears the romantic subplot dominating the back half of Prime Video's current run will have nothing whatsoever to do with Jack Reacher himself.
