French President Emmanuel Macron is making a three-day visit to the Gulf states focused on fuel supplies and strategic ties. The French leader will first visit Kuwait before heading to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar. The Elysée Palace said Macron would seek commitments for additional deliveries of diesel and petrol that could increase supplies available to France.

The shadow of the weekend's unrest hangs over the trip, with Macron saying he had considered cancelling it before deciding on Sunday to go ahead with the visit.

French diplomat Bertrand Besancenot, a former French ambassador to Qatar and Saudi Arabia who is also Macron's former special envoy to the Gulf countries, tells us more in Perspective.
