South Africa’s best-rated beaches for families

Translate

Finding the right beach for a family day out can be tricky. Parents may want somewhere scenic and clean, while children are likely to be more interested in sand, space and water.

A new analysis of 162 655 Google reviews across 119 South African beaches has revealed some of the country’s highest-rated coastal spots, and several stand out as particularly appealing options for families.

The analysis, conducted by SEO Backlinks, was based on Google Maps listings collected on 5 October 2026. Only beaches with at least 200 reviews were included.

While a Google rating cannot tell you whether a beach is safe for swimming or whether lifeguards will be on duty, it can provide an indication of how visitors rate their overall experience.

Here are some of the highly rated beaches worth considering for a family trip.

Struisbaai Main Beach

Google rating: 4.75/5

Reviews: 768

Struisbaai Main Beach is one of the strongest options for families on the list. It shared second place in the national ranking with Robberg 5 Beach and Keurbooms Beach, but had substantially more reviews than either.

Its long sandy beach and relatively warm water are among the features praised by visitors. The beach also has parking and nearby facilities, while visitor information describes it as suitable for young children.

For families looking for somewhere to spend several hours rather than simply admire the scenery, this is one of the more obvious choices.

Coney Glen Beach, Knysna

Google rating: 4.73/5

Reviews: 285

Knysna’s Coney Glen Beach came fifth in the national rankings, scoring 4.73 stars.

The beach is known for its attractive coastal setting and has picnic areas and parking, which can be particularly useful when travelling with children.

It offers a combination of scenery and space without requiring visitors to sacrifice basic conveniences.

Sardinia Bay Beach, Gqeberha

Google rating: 4.72/5

Reviews: 1 134

Sardinia Bay is another strong family option, and one of the most heavily reviewed beaches in the national top 10.

The Gqeberha beach scored 4.72 stars from more than 1 100 Google reviews, making it the sixth-highest-rated beach in the country in the analysis.

Its wide coastal setting makes it a popular choice for visitors looking for a traditional beach day.

It is also significant for families travelling along the Eastern Cape coast, as it provides a highly rated alternative to the Western Cape beaches that dominate the national ranking.

Bakoven Beach, Cape Town

Google rating: 4.71/5

Reviews: 1 162

Bakoven Beach may be small, but its Google rating is impressive. It scored 4.71 stars from more than 1 100 reviews, putting it among the country’s top-rated beaches.

The beach’s sheltered setting and large rocks create calmer sections of water, something visitors frequently mention in reviews.

For families, that can make it an attractive option, although parents should always check current conditions before allowing children into the water.

Llandudno Beach

Google rating: 4.71/5

Reviews: 3 003

Llandudno is one of the most heavily reviewed beaches in the national ranking, with more than 3 000 Google reviews.

Despite the large number of reviews, it maintains an impressive 4.71-star average.

The beach is known for its dramatic scenery and granite boulders, while its Blue Flag status for the 2026/27 season and lifesaving services during the relevant season add to its appeal.

Families should note, however, that there is limited shade and some approaches involve steps.

Pringle Bay Beach

Google rating: 4.71/5

Reviews: 898

Pringle Bay rounds out the selection. It recorded a 4.71-star rating from 898 reviews and is known for its broad sandy stretches and mountain and coastal scenery.

The combination of space and scenery makes it worth considering for families looking for a quieter beach outing away from the biggest city beaches.

The ratings are based on the October 2026 analysis and can change as new Google reviews are submitted.

Google ratings are useful for judging the overall visitor experience, but they should not be used as a measure of swimming safety or water quality.

Conditions can change, and families should check current local advisories, look for lifeguarded swimming areas and follow any warnings or signage at the beach.
