Tshwane announces a nine-hour power outage in parts of the city on Monday

The City of Tshwane will switch off electricity in several areas on Monday to carry out essential upgrades and maintenance on its electricity network.

The City announced the planned interruption in a media alert issued by its Communication, Marketing and Events Department on Friday, 25 September. The outage will affect customers supplied by the Flora Park Substation in Broederstroom.

Areas affected by the Tshwane power outage

The City confirmed that the following areas will be without electricity:

• Broederstroom
• Atom Energie
• Flora Park
• Phelandaba
• Island Shopping Centre
• Pecan Wood Estate
• Eagles Landing
• Oberon Avenue
• Saartjiesnek

The interruption will take place on Monday, 28 September, from 8:00 to 17:00. This means residents and businesses will go without power for nine hours.

Residents should prepare ahead of time by charging cellphones, laptops and power banks, and by preparing meals before the power goes off. Businesses operating in the affected areas, including those at the Island Shopping Centre, should make backup arrangements to limit disruption to their trading hours.

Why the City is switching off the power

According to the City, its technical team will use the interruption to carry out essential network upgrade and maintenance work.

The work will include testing electrical panels, bridging 33 kV power lines and repairing poles damaged by veld fires, among other activities.

The City said the planned work will strengthen the electricity network and improve its capacity to meet current and future demand. It will also make the power supply more reliable and reduce the risk of unplanned outages caused by damaged or ageing infrastructure.

For residents who have dealt with unexpected power cuts, the maintenance aims to prevent longer, unplanned interruptions in the months ahead.

Safety reminder for residents

The City urged customers to treat all electricity network points as live at all times during the interruption. Power can be restored at any moment, even before the scheduled end of the maintenance window.

Residents should also keep electrical appliances unplugged until the City has safely restored the power supply. This helps protect appliances from possible power surges when electricity returns.

The City apologised for any inconvenience the essential work may cause residents and businesses in the affected areas.
