For our next special screening event, Collider is proud to announce that we’re partnering with Netflix to offer our Los Angeles readers the opportunity to see the streamer's fantastic animated film In Waves on the big screen before its official debut. From first-time feature director Phuong Mai Nguyen and adapted from AJ Dungo’s 2019 award-winning graphic novel, In Waves has been hailed as eloquent, beautiful, and heartbreaking, and made history at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival as the first-ever animated feature to open Cannes’ Critics Week.

Now, we invite you to be among the first to see this adaptation in theaters ahead of its limited theatrical release on Thanksgiving weekend, before premiering on Netflix on December 11. After the screening, Nguyen, author and illustrator Dungo, and voice actors Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) and Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) will join us on stage for an exclusive Q&A!

If you’re in the L.A. area, don’t miss out on your chance to see this advanced screening of Netflix’s In Waves. Join us on Monday, November 2. The screening will take place at Netflix Headquarters in Hollywood and begin at 7:00 p.m. Following the post-screening Q&A, Nguyen and Dungo will also be signing posters for attendees. Read on for more information on how you can enter for your chance to win free tickets!

What Is Netflix’s ‘In Waves’ About?

Told through beautiful animation, In Waves recounts Dungo's true story of how he met one of the greatest loves of his life. In the movie, AJ (voiced by Sharpe) is a shy skateboarder who meets Kristen (Hsu), a bold surfer who transforms AJ’s life forever. Through brilliant pastel Southern California palettes and black-and-white scenes depicting Hawaiian history, In Waves’ tale of young love is one of heartbreak, determination, and hope. The movie explores finding your soulmate, your passion, and the courage to embrace living life to the fullest.

In Waves opens in theaters for a limited run on November 27 before debuting on Netflix on December 11. Check back with Collider for more special screening events.
