Indonesia to replant 9,000 hectares of coconut plantations in 2027

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is preparing to replant 9,000 hectares of coconut plantations in 2027 to boost productivity and secure raw material supplies for the domestic processing industry.

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said the program must be paired with the development of superior seed varieties that mature faster to lift smallholder yield.

"Standard tall coconut trees take six to seven years to bear fruit. We need new varieties that produce within three years so we do not fall behind Thailand," Zulkifli said in an official statement on Friday.

He made the remarks during the World Coconut Day 2026 event in Manado, North Sulawesi, on Thursday (Oct. 8).

Under the 2027 Coconut Area Development Plan, the Indonesian government aims to develop 51,721 hectares of land, comprising 42,721 hectares of expansion and 9,000 hectares of replanting.

The program will span several regions across the country, including Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.

According to Zulkifli, boosting productivity is a top priority as many of Indonesia's coconut trees are aging while international demand continues to grow, driven by the food and beverage industry.

The minister added that rising demand must be matched by stronger domestic production so local farmers and processors can seize growing market opportunities.

Therefore, the government is preparing a comprehensive development plan covering seed provision, enhanced plantation management, and expanded processing capacity.

He stressed that downstream industry development is critical to ensure Indonesia does not rely solely on raw coconut exports but can produce higher value-added goods.

The efforts, he said, involve the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming, and the sovereign wealth fund Danantara.

Zulkifli noted that the push toward strengthening coconut production and downstream processing aligns with government policy prioritizing smallholder plantations in agricultural development.

Through tree replanting, high-yielding seed development, and enhanced processing capacity, the government aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian coconut while broadening economic benefits for farming communities.
