Indonesia's BNPB to coordinate firefighting aid from Singapore

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Dudung Abdurachman said the assistance from Singapore to combat forest and land fires will be immediately coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

In a press statement after attending a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto on Monday, Dudung stated that the Indonesian government has responded to offers of assistance from Malaysia and Singapore to extinguish forest and land fires in several regions.

"There will also be assistance from Singapore, which will be communicated with the Head of BNPB," he noted.

In addition, Malaysia has also prepared 52 personnel and three aircraft to assist in handling the forest and land fires.

According to him, the government has deployed 60,000 personnel and 47 aircraft to extinguish forest and land fires in several locations across Indonesia.

During today's meeting, the president also urged the public to step up forest and land fire prevention and mitigation efforts, noting that such fires recur regularly in Indonesia.

Previously, Foreign Affairs Minister Arrmanatha Nasir conveyed President Prabowo's approval of offers of assistance from neighboring countries seeking to help extinguish the forest and land fires.

He explained that the mechanism for this assistance was already under technical discussion by the BNPB.

"It has been discussed, and it is currently underway. The president has also expressed his approval," Nasir ensured.

Prabowo also said that foreign support shows forest fires are a shared concern, not just Indonesia's problem.

"This is an environmental issue that affects many parties; even though the fires occur in Indonesia, their impact is felt by our neighbors. Therefore, they wish to assist us, and we welcome that support," he pointed out.
