Hell just froze over…in Texas. On Wednesday night at her Middle of Nowhere tour stop in Austin, Kacey Musgraves surprised the audience with another Lone Star State legend: Miranda Lambert. The two performed “Horses and Divorces” from Musgraves’ album Middle of Nowhere, a song about letting bygones be bygones (or “whiskey under the bridge,” as they sing) after years of a supposed beef.

Lambert recently paid a visit to the Rolling Stone Studio to talk about how so much of that tension comes, unfairly, from an industry that pits women against one another and breeds an environment where it feels as if there is only room for one female artist to succeed at a time. Instead, Lambert says, women “need to do this together.” She’s been living that out by producing Ella Langley’s Dandelion, with Musgraves lending her vocals recently to Megan Moroney’s “Bells & Whistles.”

“I do think that comes with some time, and age, that you realize that more,” Lambert, whose new album, Crisco, came out Oct. 2, told Rolling Stone. “The fire calms down just a little bit. You’re like, ‘OK, we all proved our point. They hear us all. There’s room for us.’ And so I want to encourage all the younger artists to be the same way because Kacey and I, whatever our beef was, neither one of us really cares or knows what it was about anymore. You know what I mean? But it’s also good to have a muse so we could use it and create this song that’s badass and I love it.”

Musgraves, who just released a Spanish version of her Texas radio hit “Uncertain, TX” with Intocable, still has three more nights in her home state ahead, in Austin and Dallas — and we have a feeling the special guest appearances aren’t quite over yet.
