Netflix Officially Finds Its ‘Arcane’ Successor With New Dark Fantasy Series

Netflix is going to Hell, and this time, that is excellent news. After turning League of Legends into an animated phenomenon with Arcane, the streamer has found another massive gaming universe filled with complicated heroes, terrifying monsters, and enough lore to fuel years of television. This one, however, will trade Piltover’s gleaming towers for a world where even the angels can be frightening.
For nearly three decades, Blizzard Entertainment has been expanding the lore of Sanctuary through games, novels, and increasingly cinematic storytelling. Its eternal war between Heaven and Hell has produced horrifying villains, doomed heroes, and some of the most recognizable imagery in dark fantasy gaming. That universe is now preparing to claim an entirely new audience.
During BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced that an animated Diablo series is officially in development at Netflix. The project will bring the franchise’s blood-soaked fantasy world to television, although its story, characters, creative team, and release window remain under wraps. The announcement came alongside the first teaser for Diablo 5, which is scheduled to arrive in 2029.
Netflix and Blizzard Have Much Bigger Plans Beyond ‘Diablo’
“We are thrilled to share that we are in development for a new animated series for Diablo with Netflix,” Faries told the BlizzCon audience, according to IGN. Describing herself as a major Diablo player, she said she loves the “indulgent darkness of Sanctuary” and is excited to see the project come to life. Netflix has not confirmed whether the series will follow established characters from the games or introduce another story within the franchise’s sprawling mythology.
