A two-bedroom apartment in Bryanston, Johannesburg, painted pink from wall to wall, went under the hammer on Saturday with an opening bid of R700 000 and an estimated market value of R1.5 million.

The unit at Key West on Halifax Street has been marketed by Auction Central as “Barbie’s Dreamhouse”, with a listing that leans hard into the colour scheme.

“Stop scrolling, Bryanston’s boldest apartment has entered the chat. If Barbie had a Johannesburg address, this would surely be it,” the listing reads.

“This completely pink, two-bedroom apartment at Key West is bright, playful, instantly recognisable and absolutely impossible to forget.”

The auctioneers leave little to the imagination.

The opening bid of R700 000 sits well below comparable two-bedroom apartments in Bryanston, where current listings range from about R820 000 to R1.65 million, according to Property24.

The estimated market value of R1.5 million would place it at the upper end of that range.

The listing pitched the apartment as a blank canvas for whoever buys it.

Broker Karabo Gabashane of Auction Central could not be reached to confirm whether the property was sold on Saturday or for how much it went under the hammer.

For now, it is not known who the new owner is, or whether they will keep the pink and live out their Barbie dreams in the Bryanston flat, or strip it back to beige.
