The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will start revoking the licenses of drunk drivers beginning November 15, the agency said Wednesday.
LTO chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao explained that while the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 remains in effect, going after offenders would require having to go through the court process. The LTO's jurisdiction, Lacanilao said, is with the drivers' license.
"'Yung mga driver na mahuhuli na naka-inom at magpo-positive doon sa tatlong test, pati doon sa breath analyzer, ang mangyayari sa driver's license niyan, mare-revoke," Lacanilao told GMA News in a phone call.
(Drivers caught drinking and would be positive in the three tests, as well as the breath analyzer, will have their licenses revoked.)
The order will take effect on November 15, ahead of the expected traffic grind of the Christmas season.
According to Lacanilao, the revocation could still be appealed. The case will go through the LTO's Intelligence and Investigation Division, while hearings will be conducted before a resolution is reached.
However, more serious incidents could lead to permanent revocation.
"Kung nakabangga sila, nakapatay sila, perpetual revocation," Lacanilao said.
(If they hit someone, kill someone, this will result in perpetual revocation.)
Lacanilao said incidents of drunk driving have been logged over the years, with Cebu having the most cases. — VDV, GMA News
