Gilmore Girls and Virgin River collide in the CW's small-town 4-season romantic drama. While Gilmore Girls and Netflix's Virgin River are often considered the pinnacle of small-town storytelling, they're far from the only TV shows to highlight the charms (and pitfalls) of small-town life. Between nosy neighbors, cute town squares, and the difficulties of finding romance in a place that knows your entire personal history, it's comforting and nostalgic to return to a familiar setting episode after episode, season after season.

Characters become like family. The quirky townspeople are as integral to the show's success as the leading ensemble. Small-town romance and family dramas can create an atmosphere that's hard to replicate in other genres. There's a reason Gilmore Girls, Virgin River, Dawson's Creek, Sullivan's Creek, Sweet Magnolias, Heartland, and more still draw in audiences, sometimes years or decades after they've gone off the air. The same is true for Hart of Dixie, which ran for 76 episodes on the CW between 2011 and 2015, bridging the gap between Gilmore Girls' 2007 finale and Virgin River's 2019 premiere.

Starring The O.C.'s Rachel Bilson as die-hard New York surgeon Zoe Hart, Hart of Dixie follows the titular doctor as she makes her way to the fictional town of Bluebell, Alabama — which happens to look a lot like Stars Hollow — when one of the town's beloved GPs leaves her half his practice in his will. What follows is a feel-good, romantic journey of self-discovery and small-town shenanigans, as Dr. Hart learns more about her family history, makes new friends (and frenemies), and embraces the eccentricities and hardships of small-town life and medicine.

Hart Of Dixie Has A Lot In Common With Netflix's Virgin River

Hart of Dixie and Virgin River aren't only comparable because they're both small-town dramas. Mel's arrival in Virgin River echoes Zoe's arrival in Bluebell. Both women are medical professionals from major cities seeking a fresh start in their towns' local practices; Zoe and Mel learn to handle untrusting patients and grumpy, stubborn local doctors, hoping to modernize and improve local access to medical care. Both characters balance their professional aspirations with their personal desires and relationships, as Mel falls in love with bar owner Jack after her first husband's death, and Zoe falls for two very different men (one of whom works in and eventually owns a bar).

Mel and Zoe even contend with the same primary physician: Tim Matheson plays Dr. Brick Breeland in Hart of Dixie and Dr. Vernon Mullins in Virgin River. The characters are eerily similar. Eventually, they win him over with their expert knowledge and genuine love for their patients. At first, Matheson was worried that he was being typecast when he was approached for Virgin River. However, according to his memoir, Damn Glad to Meet You: My Seven Decades in the Hollywood Trenches, Netflix's "technology" knew "audiences wanted to see [him] as a curmudgeonly doctor. Give the people what they want" (via People).

Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life Is A 4-Episode Version Of Hart Of Dixie

Rachel Bilson and Wilson Bethel in Hart of Dixie

Viewers will recognize much of Stars Hollow in Bluebell, and not just the famous gazebo. Bluebell's version of Sean Gunn's Kirk is Ross Phillips' Tom Long, the town's jack-of-all-trades. Instead of Luke's diner, Bluebell has the Rammer Jammer. There's a picnic basket auction. A local gossip monger named Dash DeWitt (Reginald VelJohnson). Town meetings. Re-enactment enthusiasts. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking Hart of Dixie is a Southern carbon copy of Gilmore Girls, but that's not true.

In fact, funnily enough, Gilmore Girls' four-episode revival series, A Year in the Life, feels a lot more like Hart of Dixie than Hart of Dixie feels like the original Gilmore Girls. Amy Sherman-Palladino went all in on Stars Hollow's unique, quirky zaniness in the limited series, leaning into the town's antics more than ever. This didn't always work, though. If viewers were only going to be reunited with these characters for a handful of hours, they should have been the focus, not Sutton Foster's considerable musical talents.

This isn't an issue in Hart of Dixie. The series establishes its cheesy, cheery tone from the start and actively celebrates it. The characters' relationships help anchor the series. The romances have real meaning, as does Zoe's friendship with Mayor Lavon Hayes (Cress Williams) and her enemies-to-reluctant-friends dynamic with Dr. Breeland's oldest daughter, Lemon (Jaime King). Zoe's complicated relationship with her wealthy mother differs from Lorelai's and Emily's, too, even though it informs her decision to stay in Bluebell.

Hart of Dixie is an easy watch — certainly easier than Virgin River, which often deals with heavier topics and surprising criminal elements — but there's a solid balance between character work and small-town charm. It's never either-or. That's what makes it such a fun, endearing show, even 11 years after its over-the-top, joyful finale.

Hart of Dixie is available to stream via Prime Video.
