Nepal–Tibet floods in maps, photos and videos

A torrent of floodwater has swept through the Himalayan border region between Nepal and Tibet.

At least 160 people have been killed and hundreds more are missing, including 34 Australians.

Climate experts believe a glacier avalanche likely caused the flood. The Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said river water levels rose by up to 9 metres in half an hour at the height of the flood.

In a still-unfolding disaster, verified videos and images show widespread destruction.

The sheer force of the floodwaters caused an entire bridge to snap off and travel down the river before becoming completely engulfed.

Distressing security footage captured on the Chinese side of the Nepal–Tibet border showed many people fleeing before a torrent of rock, mud and water destroyed homes, buildings and vehicles.

The catastrophic flooding has wiped out houses, trees and infrastructure, with the true scale of the devastation yet to emerge.

Amid the ruins, there are also stories of survival.

Police officers have been seen carrying a survivor to safety at Trishuli in Nepal's Nuwakot district.

It will be a race against time for emergency responders to save what — and who — has been buried in the devastation.

Nepal's rescue helicopters have been unable to land in the affected areas until the waters recede, an army spokesperson said.

Witnesses have told media on the ground that they watched entire villages get swept away, adding "there is devastation everywhere we look".
